New social platform from Twitter founder

Bluesky Social is a free social networking application for mobile from developer Bluesky PBLLC. It is a social media platform in development by former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey. It aims to be a decentralized and open space wherein users and creators can come in and be able to create freely.

Compared to giants like Facebook or Twitter, Bluesky Social is meant to be for everyone to join in, without the one-sided restrictions of being locked into a single platform. It's in active development with the goal of creating a public standard that other services can join and be part of.

A more open social network

The social networking space is divvied up to cater to different users and demographics. You have plenty of choices: from Instagram that's home to influencers and small brands to Twitter for a great source of breaking global news. Speaking of the latter, with new management in tow, its former CEO has now set his sights on Bluesky Social, taking an open approach to socializing online.

This platform is an initiative started by Jack Dorsey within Twitter back in 2019 that now sees renewed focus and active development just as Elon Musk is taking over his former company. It's being described as a space where creators and developers can become independent from platform restrictions. It boasts a new technology called AT Protocol, which gives users control over their online algorithms.

Now, do note that this new service is still in active development, so it's not available to the public just yet. The company has been calling for active beta users, though. If you're interested in taking part and keeping up to date with its progress, you can opt to join the program. Everyone else will have to wait for further news and announcements.

Opening to the public

The decentralized social media platform reaches a major milestone as it throws open its doors to the public, removing the invite-only status that has characterized its early days. Such a move signifies an embracing of inclusivity and openness, allowing anyone interested to join the burgeoning network and contribute to its growth and evolution. In a bid to foster a diverse and innovative ecosystem, the platform is also unveiling plans to release its AT Protocol, laying down the gauntlet to the widely adopted ActivityPub.

The AT Protocol is designed to be an advanced framework for communication and federation across decentralized social applications, promising new capabilities and user autonomy. Later on, developers will be able to run their own servers using this protocol, potentially catalyzing a new wave of decentralized apps. Such a groundbreaking step is not only a testament to Bluesky's commitment to decentralization but also to the empowerment of its users, as they will have the freedom to take their digital identities across various platforms within the network.

A new player

The acquisition of Twitter is officially a closed-and-done deal, but its former CEO didn't waste any time and went all-in with Bluesky Social. While it's still early days for the budding platform, signs point to positive things to come in the future. If it can deliver on its promises, it will be a compelling alternative to the established options you have now.
